The Piaggio Wi-Bike Comfort Plus Unisex is the smartest e-bike I have come across so far. It features a GPS anti-theft device, connects with your smartphone to enable navigation, and even acts as your personal trainer with training programmes, goals and linking to a heart-rate monitor. And below all the cool stuff lies real quality components, such as a Samsung battery, Shimano disc brakes and, naturally, a Piaggio motor.
The bike also looks great. Our test bike was the Piaggio Wi-Bike Comfort Plus Unisex which features a step-though frame, leather seat and ergonomic hand grips (which are really comfortable) in an overall retro design. Build quality is great, and running the cables inside the frame is a nice touch, uncluttering the surfaces. There are lights, mudguards and a parcel shelf as standard, and the cream-coloured tyres add to the light and airy look of the bike.
The design might be old-school, but there’s nothing dated about the technology that Piaggio has equipped this e-bike with. For a start, there are no gears as such, just different levels of assistance: Eco, Tour, Power and Walk (which adds just enough power for you to walk with the bike).
In addition to the assistance levels there is a ‘Hill’ adjuster on the right-hand grip, which allows a seamless adjustment of power as required. This is particularly handy for hilly rides. The set-up may sound cumbersome, but in practice this Piaggio Wi-Bike Comfort Plus Unisex is about as easy to use as they come.
Power delivery is super-smooth. The Piaggio motor engages and disengages so elegantly that it’s difficult to know when it’s giving you a push. Even when the magic 15.5mph limit is breached and the motor assistance stops, the bike is not unbearably heavy to pedal.
You don’t need a smartphone to ride this bike; there is a removable digital display and controls on the handlebars that take care of all the basics. But if you do link the bike up with your Apple or Android phone you can unlock a lot more controls and features, such as navigation, more influence over power settings, battery performance optimisation, training programmes and goals. You can also link-up a heart rate monitor to check on how much exercise you’re getting.
The Piaggio Wi-Bike Comfort Plus Unisex comes with a GPS anti-theft system that alerts you with a message if the bike is moved – very handy if you are near enough to take action, and also to locate the bike if you can’t stop it disappearing in the first place.
